kk (my husband) gets a book

This week my husband has been reading the hugest book: Oathbringer, by Brandon Sanderson.

It's a 1200+ page beast that tends to take over peoples' lives once they start it... our class discussion about video game addiction reminded me of my husband trying to get through this series. These books really pull you in, they're constantly on your mind, they displace most other activities, they dwarf homework, and my husband and I aren't in conflict about the book but only because I've read it and understand why the nonstop reading. (I did exactly the same)

What I've mostly been doing is getting a kick out of spectating.

Reading it has made Kaleb (my husband) belly laugh, cry, yell at characters, hoot/holler and jump up and hug me, moan and groan about character decisions, ... I've never seen anyone so involved in a book and so expressive about it and it's hilarious. Towards the climax yesterday (I was reading along with him) we both independently came to the conclusion -- he with teary eyes -- that this is pretty much scripture. Sacrilegious? Hm. But such great morals.

Kaleb didn't want to read these books at first; he hasn't read much in college because of time, and normally he's out being fit and strong and athletic -- he's much more prone to breaking records than to being a geek -- so I've had fun watching.

And that's all. Really we've just been consumed by this book this week, and he finished it this morning and I (started it again and) have 25 pages left so I'll finish it this afternoon, and now I don't know what we'll do but it'll be interesting to see what our life reverts to with the beast gone. We both feel like our lives are better for having read this book and honestly, spending evenings reading and laughing with him and at his reactions has been more (and a different kind of) fun than I would have dreamed up on my own :)

  1. I absolutely loved the way you wrote this!! It made me smile! :) It is so fun how you and your husband read it together. That is such a great bonding experience. I especially loved how you both got so into the story that your lives almost revolved around it! Books are so interesting because they are just a whole bunch of words on the page, but they can seriously change your life. I wish I had more time to read for fun. When I do I will have to read this book! :)

  3. I love this so much. I am so guilty of letting books just completely consume my life and it's so fun that the two of you are reading it together! I haven't ever read Oathbringer, but it sounds really interesting and I'll have to look into it!
