before and after

Friday night, pre-movie

I'm about to watch the Man From Snowy River. I remember not loving this movie when I was younger, or at least not admitting to my parents I liked it. But somehow it became an old classic and a year or two ago I walked in on some friends having a watch party for it. My husband thinks it might be boring, even though I showed him the trailer and wow it's so old. I'm excited. Jim and Jess? I think those were their names, the main characters. If you haven't watched this movie, it's about Australia, cowboys, love, wild horses and self-discovery.

Saturday, post-movie

  • the music was great
  • lots of very zoomed-in face shots
  • grainier image than the 30 minutes of Star Wars we watched right before
  • a couple great & funny one-liners
  • it zoomed in on the eye of a horse 3x in a row (made us laugh)
  • some old ideas about feminism
  • two kissing scenes
  • one angry and protective dad
  • a peg leg
  • a single herd of wild horses
  • one boy --> man named Jim
  • lots of mountains
  • a couple storms
  • some good horse riding scenes
  • jerks who try to beat up the hero
  • one dad who dies
  • some gold diggers who strike a vein
  • a mysterious plot about the mother and daughter
  • nice rolling credits over old Australian nature shots
  • again, great music
  • pretty horses
Hm maybe I shouldn't have watched it so late because now I'm tired. Buut, I liked it. It was different than I remembered -- I remembered it very nostalgically and as this great, perfect movie and it's not perfect. But, it's a nice one for sure and it has a lot of good feelings in it and, honestly, movies that are just straight action, intensity, fighting, could learn something from the ones like this that just take you for a more serene,  small-town/countryside, morally feel-good, calm and beautiful music, kind of ride.

  1. I feel like I have vaguely heard of this movie like once in my childhood. However, after reading your post I think this would be a fun movie to see. It sounds like a classic, good time movie.

  2. I love that you did a comparison of before and after you watched the movie! That is a great idea and you probably got a lot out of it! This sounds like a good movie- I need to watch it! I am always looking for feel-good movies that are cute, chill, and have a good message to them. Every once in a while I think an action movie is fun, but I definitely agree that take you for a ride are more interesting and worthwhile. Awesome post!
